The Department of Geosciences and the Mineral Physics Institute (MPI) at Stony Brook University have a strong tradition in petrology, mineral physics, and planetary science. Our academic environment provides an exceptional setting for studying minerals, rocks, and other materials within the context of planetary structure and evolution. Stony Brook University is a flagship institution of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, and we proudly share SUNY's mission to deliver the highest-quality public higher education with the broadest possible access for all New Yorkers.
Our group is housed in the Earth and Space Sciences building at Stony Brook University. Our campus is located on the wooded North Shore of Long Island, just 30 minutes by car from Fire Island and National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven, an hour from Queens and Brooklyn, and 90 minutes from Manhattan by train. Stony Brook is surrounded by expansive seascapes, sand dunes, and salt marshes. This quiet environment nurtures focused research, while the cultural life of New York City is within easy reach.
